Subah-o-Shyam

Subah-o-Shyam is a 1972 romantic film directed by Tapi Chanakya and jointly produced by the film industries of Iran and India, marking the first co-production between the two countries. Written by Saeed Motalebi, the picture was shot simultaneously in two languages, Hindi and Persian. The Persian version reached Iranian screens in 1971 under the title Homaye Saadet, while the Hindi version followed a year later as Subah-O-Shaam. Running roughly two hours, the film blends romance, drama, comedy and action. Its cast brings together stars from both cinemas: Mohammad-Ali Fardin, Waheeda Rehman, Sanjeev Kumar, Irene Zazians, Loreta, Simin Ghaffari, Mir-Mohammad Tajaddod, Mohammadtaghi Kohanmouei, Ali Miri, Farhad Hamidi and Jamileh. The music was composed by the celebrated duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Because it was conceived as a bridge between Bollywood and Persian cinema, the film is remembered less for a single storyline than for its unusual bilingual production and its pioneering role in Indo-Iranian filmmaking.
