Hasan Kaçan — Biography

Turkish cartoonist, screenwriter, actor and television presenter Hasan Kaçan has made a place in Turkish humour through both his drawing and his screen work. His main credits include the comic strips of the Gırgır era, the script of the series Ekmek Teknesi and the character Heredot Cevdet, whom he played in it.

Born in the İncesu district of Kayseri, Kaçan moved to Istanbul with his family when very young. Meeting Oğuz Aral in middle school set his direction; he drew for about fifteen years in the magazines Gırgır and Ustura and credited Aral's influence at every opportunity. After Gırgır he founded Hıbır with Semih Balcıoğlu, and between 1994 and 1997 he and friends published Keskin Ustura, a Friday supplement of Yeni Şafak. His comic strips Eşşek Herif and Cork counted among the best-loved of their kind, and in the 1990s he wrote columns in the newspapers Cumhuriyet and Yeni Şafak.

He came to the screen in 1995-1997 with his own Kanal 7 programme, Hasan Kaçan Folk Show. He wrote for Ekmek Teknesi; played Captain Küstü in Eşref Saati, Berber Ali in Halil İbrahim Sofrası and the retired pilot Nadir in Gönül Hırsızı; guest-starred in Leyla ile Mecnun; and played the caveman in the 2008 film A.R.O.G. On TRT he presented Zaman Matinesi and Çizgi Atölyesi, and in 2020 he became producer and writer of the comedy series Tövbeler Olsun. On 5–10 July 2008 he served as the symbolic Nasreddin Hodja at the Nasreddin Hodja festival in Akşehir. He is the elder brother of the writer Metin Kaçan and the actor Fatih Kaçan.
