Münir Özkul — Biography

Münir Özkul was a Turkish stage and film actor, born on 15 August 1925 in Bakırköy and based for most of his life in Istanbul, where he died on 5 January 2018. Educated at Istanbul High School, he started out in theatre, working with the Istanbul City Theatre and the State Theatre before inheriting the ceremonial headwear once worn by veteran comic actor İsmail Dümbüllü, a symbolic passing of the torch in traditional Turkish stage comedy. He grew into one of Turkish cinema's most recognizable character actors, best remembered for playing the stern yet warm-hearted headmaster in the Hababam Sınıfı film series. In 1972 he received the Golden Orange Award for Best Actor for his role in Sev Kardeşim. He frequently shared the screen with actress Adile Naşit, forming one of Turkish cinema's most memorable on-screen pairings, and appeared in dozens of films and television productions across a long career. He was honored with the title of State Artist of Turkey.
