Necdet Mahfi Ayral — Biography

Born on August 6, 1908 in Istanbul under the name İbrahim Necdet Ayral, Necdet Mahfi Ayral built a career spanning both theatre and film, working not only as an actor but also as a screenwriter and stage director. He became especially well known for dubbing the Italian comic actor Totò into Turkish.

Starting with early Turkish cinema titles such as Akasya Palas (1940) and Akdeniz Korsanları (1950), Ayral appeared in more than 60 productions over his career, including a rare international credit in French director Alain Robbe-Grillet's 1963 film L'Immortelle. Remarkably active into old age, he was still performing decades later, taking roles in acclaimed 1990s Turkish films including Eşkıya, Hamam, and Mektup — a stretch that earned him recognition as one of the oldest working actors in Turkish cinema.

He died in Istanbul in early June 2004. His daughter, Jeyan Mahfi Ayral Tözüm, went on to become a well-known actress and one of Turkish cinema's most recognizable dubbing voices.
