Miracle in Cell No. 7 (7. Koğuştaki Mucize)

Movie · 2019 · 7 people

Miracle in Cell No. 7 is a 2019 Turkish drama helmed by Mehmet Ada Öztekin, built on a screenplay credited to Kubilay Tat. The project reworks the 2013 South Korean film that shares its title, keeping the core setup while reshaping the characters, plot turns and overall mood for a Turkish audience.

At its center is Memo, an intellectually disabled father who shares a rural home with his young daughter and his grandmother. When the local military commander's daughter dies after a fall from a cliff, Memo — who had actually tried to rescue her — is wrongly blamed for her death and condemned to execution. Inside prison he is initially targeted by fellow inmates, yet slowly earns their trust, all while clinging to hope of reuniting with his daughter, Ova.

The ensemble includes Aras Bulut İynemli, Nisa Sofiya Aksongur, Celile Toyon, İlker Aksum, Mesut Akusta, Deniz Baysal, Yurdaer Okur and Sarp Akkaya, with Hayal Köseoğlu and Deniz Celiloğlu also appearing.

Opening in cinemas that October, the picture drew over 5.3 million admissions to become the top-grossing release in Türkiye for the year, then found further audiences abroad through Netflix, notably in France and across Latin America. It represented Türkiye in the international feature race at the 93rd Academy Awards but fell short of the final shortlist.
