Any Number Can Win (original title Mélodie en sous-sol) is a 1963 French-Italian crime and heist film directed by Henri Verneuil. It adapts the 1960 American novel The Big Grab, written by Zekial Marko under the pen name John Trinian. The story follows two gangsters who devise an elaborate scheme to rob a casino in Cannes, with French screen icons Jean Gabin and Alain Delon in the leading roles as the veteran criminal and his younger accomplice. The screenplay was written by Michel Audiard, Albert Simonin and Verneuil himself. Released in France in March 1963, the picture drew strong critical notices and became a major box-office success, selling around 3.5 million tickets in its home country. Blending suspense with character drama, it remains one of the best-known European heist films of its era.
