Ordeal (Ateşten Gömlek) (translated)

Ateşten Gömlek (The Shirt of Flame) is a 1923 black-and-white Turkish war drama written and directed by Muhsin Ertuğrul, adapted from Halide Edib Adıvar's 1922 novel of the same name and produced by Kemal Film. It holds a milestone place in Turkish cinema as the first feature-length film about the War of Independence, and as the first movie to feature Turkish Muslim actresses, with Bedia Muvahhit as Ayşe and Neyyire Neyir as Kezban.

The story unfolds through the memoirs of Peyami, a reserve officer wounded at the front: Ayşe, who lost her husband and child in İzmir, takes refuge in Istanbul, joins protests and later serves as a nurse in Anatolia, while the love that both Peyami and Major İhsan feel for her merges with the national struggle and leads to a tragic end. The film premiered on 23 April 1923 at the Palas Cinema in Beyoğlu, shown in two parts; Vedat Örfi Bengü directed a remake in 1950.
