Cool School Camp (Çılgın Dersane Kampta)

Movie · 2008 · 6 people

Çılgın Dersane Kampta (Cool School Camp) reached cinemas in January 2008 as the sequel to Çılgın Dersane, a Turkish teen comedy. Faruk Aksoy directed it and co-wrote the screenplay with Şafak Güçlü and İrfan Saruhan. Produced by Aksoy Film, the 110-minute film was shot in Ağva, Şile. About 225,000 people saw it in Turkey in the first week, and it ranks among the highest-grossing Turkish films of 2008.

With the university entrance exams not far off, Hadi (Cüneyt Arkın), owner of the Özlem tutoring school in Istanbul, takes students and teachers to a fifteen-day camp in the countryside to ease the exam stress. There the childhood friends Berksan, now a famous pop star, and Bahar (Sevil Uyar) meet again, and feelings left unspoken for years come out. Romance stirs among the teachers too, as Mustafa (Mustafa Topaloğlu) and Yüksel (Sibel Tüzün) grow closer. Meanwhile Şahin, who has tried every way to bring Hadi down, keeps scheming. Simge Tertemiz (Gamze), Ceyda Ateş (Esra) and Alp Kırşan (Sakar Bekir) are also in the cast.

Ertunç Şenkay was cinematographer, and the producers were Faruk Aksoy, Ayşe Germen and Ebru Aksoy.

Through different eyes

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

A tutoring school escaping exam stress at a camp, sweet crushes and plenty of mix-ups: the subject sits very close to kids in middle and high school. Teenagers will recognise themselves, and the grown-ups will smile at the sight of Cüneyt Arkın. It is a light, cheerful teen comedy. At 110 minutes, though, it may feel a bit long for younger children. A good pick to watch as a family when someone in the house is preparing for exams and needs a lift.

Yeşilçam Nostalgic A viewer raised on the classics, looking for warm storytelling and strong acting.

For an eye raised on the classics, it is a pleasant surprise to see a master like Cüneyt Arkın as a kindly school owner taking his students out into nature to ease their exam nerves. The greenery of Ağva gives the film some fresh air, too. Still, I wanted more. In the old films, the feelings Berksan and Bahar left unspoken for years would have reached the heart through a song or a single look; here they are mostly lost among loud jokes. Young viewers may find it charming, but the story's heart is rather thin.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

As a sequel, Çılgın Dersane Kampta rarely does more than replay the first film's winning formula in a new location. The camp could have offered a fresh dramatic frame; instead the script lines up three separate threads, Berksan and Bahar meeting again, the romance among the teachers and Şahin's schemes, one after another rather than weaving them together. The 110-minute running time makes that looseness more noticeable, and there is a fair amount of padding an editor could have trimmed. Ertunç Şenkay's use of the natural locations in Ağva gives the film some visual breathing room. Reaching around 225,000 viewers in its first week shows the formula worked with audiences, but in cinematic terms this is a safe teen comedy that takes no risks.
