Contraband (Luca il contrabbandiere)
Lucio Fulci directed the Italian film Contraband, known in Italian as Luca il contrabbandiere ("Luca the smuggler"), in 1980. A poliziottesco, it borrows elements from the splatter trend of the time. Fulci co-wrote it with Giorgio Mariuzzo; it runs about 91 minutes and is titled La Guerre des gangs in France and Das Syndikat des Grauens in Germany.
The story is set in Naples. Luca Di Angelo (Fabio Testi) leads a comfortable life smuggling cigarettes by speedboat with his brother. After a load goes missing, the two are caught between a pair of contraband bosses; his brother Michele is killed before his eyes and the other smugglers are wiped out one by one. Soon a sadistic outsider, "the Marseillais", is revealed to be pushing drugs into the city, eliminating any rival. With Testi and Marcel Bozzuffi on opposite sides, a showdown is unavoidable. Venantino Venantini and Nello Pazzafini also appear in the cast.
The film is known for explicit violence: in Germany both cut and uncut versions were seized in the 1980s, and it stayed confiscated until March 2018. The story was reworked with extra violence to improve the pacing. In the second week of a ten-week shoot the budget ran out, and real Neapolitan smugglers funded it, then changed the plot and title.
