Journalist (Gazeteci)

Journalist (Gazeteci) (translated)

Movie · 1980 · 12 people

A reporter infiltrates the world of the mafia and smuggling in the 1979 Turkish film Gazeteci ("The Journalist"), which is also said to have been released in 1980. Part adventure, part crime story, it was directed by Yücel Uçanoğlu, written by Fuat Özlüer and produced by Berker İnanoğlu. Made by Sezer Film in colour on 35 mm, it runs 71 minutes and stars Kadir İnanır and Sevda Karaca.

At its centre is Kemal Şahin (Kadir İnanır), a leading figure in a large smuggling ring that stands behind much of the country's dark business, arms trafficking included. A newspaper decides to run a series on Kemal, but none of its reporters dares to tail him. Just as the series is about to be scrapped, the reporter Zeynep Öncü (Sevda Karaca) takes the job. She finds work at a nightclub Kemal frequents, catches his eye, and begins gathering information.

The cast also includes Kadir Savun as Afsız Apo, Hüseyin Peyda, Turgut Özatay, Nejat Gürçen as the industrialist Tarık Çakkı, Aliye Rona as the mother and Gülten Ceylan as Seher. Hüseyin Özşahin was the director of photography.

Through different eyes

Yeşilçam Nostalgic A viewer raised on the classics, looking for warm storytelling and strong acting.

Gazeteci is an old-fashioned tough-guy-and-nightclub film that places Kadir İnanır in the underworld. To my mind, though, its most interesting feature is that it gives the courage to a woman reporter: Zeynep takes on the job her male colleagues shy away from. A heroine like that was not common in the films of those years. The nightclub setting, the swagger of the underworld and a journalist chasing a story come together, and the simple yet absorbing storytelling of the old films shows here too. A pleasant keepsake for anyone who wants to see Kadir İnanır and Sevda Karaca together.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

A reporter going undercover in the mafia: hard to find a better starting point for suspense. Its fairly short running time works in its favour too; the story has little time to dawdle. Judged by today's action standards, though, the way the smuggling and arms world is put on screen may look modest. A tidy pick for anyone curious about old-school crime films.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Fuat Özlüer's script sets up a solid premise: getting to know a ring leader nobody dares approach through the eyes of a reporter chasing a story. That point of view is a handy device for opening up the crime world to the audience step by step. But leaning on Kadir İnanır's star power on one side and Zeynep's investigation on the other risks splitting the film's centre in two; the pull between the allure of the tough guy and the journalist's mission is material that can easily give in to the genre's familiar formulas. Sitting between adventure and crime film, it is best judged as a work that uses the genre's conventions efficiently rather than one that transcends them.
