Teacher (Öğretmen) (translated)

TV Series · 2020 · 15 people

Youth drama, psychological thriller and drama combine in Öğretmen ("Teacher"), a 2020 Turkish television series. Adapted from the Japanese series Mr. Hiiragi's Homeroom, it premiered on Fox on March 4, 2020. Produced by Medyapım and MF Yapım, it ended with its 9th episode on November 15, 2020. Koray Kerimoğlu directed and Merve Girgin wrote the script.

At the centre is physics teacher Akif Erdem, played by İlker Kaleli. To learn the truth behind the death of his student Rüya, Akif takes his final-year class hostage inside the school. Questioning the students one by one, he tries to expose each one's part in the tragedy, and long-hidden secrets slowly come to light. Ceren Moray plays the teacher Zeynep, with Serhat Kılıç, Serkan Keskin and Şerif Erol also in major roles, and young actors including Mert Ramazan Demir, Afra Saraçoğlu, Elif Ceren Balıkçı and Efekan Can among the students.

It was broadcast as 9 episodes of 120 minutes, and production is said to have paused because of the pandemic. In France it was re-edited into 22 episodes of 45 minutes, titled La Dernière Leçon, and began airing on Novelas TV on June 27, 2026.

Through different eyes

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

Öğretmen's biggest strength and biggest weakness are the same thing: its length. A series that wraps up in nine episodes never suffers a sagging middle; the hostage setup and the one-by-one questioning of the students give every episode a clear goal. But each episode runs 120 minutes, and that is felt whenever the interrogation structure starts to repeat itself. Giving each student in the large young cast a chance to tell their own story is a nice touch, though some of the secrets are revealed in a rush. Being adapted from a Japanese series tightened the plot, yet viewers used to the pace of local dramas may find it a little unfamiliar at first.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

A teacher taking his whole class hostage inside the school: the setup promises tension from the start. The closed setting, the time pressure and the balance of suspects shifting with each interrogation keep the pace up. But psychological suspense dominates, so there is more talk and confrontation than physical action. The episodes are very long; a tighter edit could have made the same story hit even harder.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

The subject is heavy: a student's death, a class taken hostage and the secrets young people keep. A teacher holding his own students hostage could frighten young children. Watched together with high-school-age teenagers, it offers a good opening to talk about school life, responsibility and peer pressure. Not suitable for little ones.
