Jasmila Žbanić wrote, produced and directed Quo Vadis, Aida?, a war drama from 2020 whose Latin title asks "Where are you going, Aida?". She based it on Under the UN Flag, a book by Hasan Nuhanović. It is an international co-production involving twelve production companies. Companies from eight countries took part, led by Bosnia and Herzegovina, Germany and France. The film premiered in the main competition of the 77th Venice International Film Festival and was nominated for Best International Feature Film at the 93rd Academy Awards.

Its subject is the Srebrenica massacre of July 1995, in which the Bosnian Serb Army under General Ratko Mladić killed more than 8,300 Bosniak men and boys. The story follows Aida Selmanagić, a translator for the United Nations, who tries to carry out her duties while saving her husband and two sons from certain death. Jasna Đuričić plays Aida, Izudin Bajrović her husband Nihad and Boris Isaković Mladić; Johan Heldenbergh and Emir Hadžihafizbegović are also in the cast.

It won the audience award at the Rotterdam International Film Festival, the best foreign film prize at the Göteborg Film Festival in 2021 and the European Film Awards for Best Film, Best Director and Best Actress. It also earned two BAFTA nominations. A sequel announced by Žbanić, The Missing Part, is expected in 2027.

Through different eyes

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

The film tells of the Srebrenica massacre of July 1995, in which the Bosnian Serb Army under General Ratko Mladić killed more than 8,300 Bosniak men and boys, through the eyes of Aida Selmanagić, a translator for the United Nations. That vantage point matters: Aida is both part of the institution and a mother trying to save her family. Based on Hasan Nuhanović's book Under the UN Flag, the film makes you think about the limits of international protection and how ordinary people can be left alone within those limits. A heavy but necessary act of witness for anyone who wants to understand this dark page of recent history.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

This is not one to watch with children. Its subject is the Srebrenica massacre, in which thousands of men and boys were killed. It is the story of a mother trying to save her husband and two sons, which can be deeply shaking for parents too. With older teenagers it can work, if you are ready to talk it through afterwards. Know that it will be a heavy evening.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

Don't put this on as a war film expecting combat scenes; it is not an action movie. But the tension is sky-high: Aida trying to do her job while saving her husband and two sons keeps you pinned to your seat for 101 minutes. Jasna Đuričić carries the whole weight. The subject is real and very heavy; not for anyone looking to be entertained, but a yes if you want gripping tension.
