The Deer

The Deer (Persian: Gavaznha) is a 1974 Iranian drama film written and directed by Masoud Kimiai and produced by Mehdi Missaghieh at the Misaghieh studio. Shot in black and white, it stars Behrouz Vossoughi, the most famous Iranian actor of the pre-revolution era, and tells a story based on the renewal of an old friendship under unexpected and strange circumstances.

The film was among the most acclaimed Persian movies made before the 1979 revolution, and Vossoughi won the best actor award at the third Tehran International Film Festival in 1974 for his performance. In a 2002 poll of 55 Iranian film critics, it was voted the best film in Iranian cinema history alongside Bahram Beyzaie's Bashu, the Little Stranger; Film magazine polls in 2009 and 2019 gave it the same distinction.
