Behruz Vüsuki — Biography

Behrouz Vossoughi is regarded as one of the brightest stars of Iranian cinema in the 1960s and 70s. He became a legend as the vengeful hero of Masoud Kimiai's Gheysar, a role that led fans to call him the "Caesar of Iranian cinema". After 1979 he settled abroad, and he returned to the big screen in Bahman Ghobadi's Rhino Season.

Before cinema he worked as a clerk in the health and tax offices, and then as a dubbing artist and radio and television announcer. He began acting in films with Samuel Khachikian, but his breakthrough came with Gheysar (1969), which earned him the Best Actor award at the Sepas Film Festival; he won the same prize the next year for Reza Motorcyclist. He kept working with Kimiai on Dash Akol and The Deer, the latter winning him the Winged Goat at the Tehran International Film Festival. His part as a peasant seeking justice in Amir Naderi's Tangsir is described as his most acclaimed performance. Late in the 1970s he was among the first Iranian actors in American and European co-productions, such as Caravans, co-starring Anthony Quinn, and Sphinx.

He received Best Actor at the International Film Festival of India in 1974 and a lifetime achievement award at the San Francisco International Film Festival in 2006. His brothers Changiz and Shahrad Vossoughi are also actors.
