The Family

The Family (La famiglia) is a 1987 Italian-French drama directed by Ettore Scola, who co-wrote the screenplay with Ruggero Maccari and Furio Scarpelli. Set in a large Roman apartment, the film unfolds in nine episodes spaced ten years apart, following the life of the middle-class Carlo and his extended family against the backdrop of twentieth-century events such as World War I and World War II.

Starring Vittorio Gassman, Fanny Ardant, Philippe Noiret and Stefania Sandrelli, it traces decades of love, jealousy, political upheaval and personal growth. The film competed at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival, won the David di Donatello for Best Film, and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 60th Academy Awards, representing Italy.
