The Game Is Over
Directed by Roger Vadim, this 1966 French-Italian drama freely adapts Émile Zola's 1871-72 novel La Curée, itself a modern variation on the ancient Phaedra myth. Following the example of Marcel Carné's Thérèse Raquin, Vadim transposed the story from the nineteenth century into contemporary French society. Jane Fonda stars alongside Peter McEnery and Michel Piccoli.
The film was the second collaboration between Vadim and Fonda, whom he had married in August 1965, shortly before shooting began. Notably, two separate versions of the picture were produced and released: one performed in English and the other in French.
