Two Men in Town

Directed by José Giovanni, the 1973 Franco-Italian crime drama Deux Hommes dans la ville (Two Men in Town) follows Gino Strabliggi (Alain Delon), a man sent to prison for armed robbery. Thanks to good behavior, he is granted parole two years before his sentence ends, largely through the support of Germain Cazeneuve (Jean Gabin), an experienced and decent-hearted prison worker who believes in him. Determined to leave his criminal past behind, Gino moves to a small town, finds honest work and tries to build a respectable new life. Yet misfortune soon catches up with him: old acquaintances resurface and the relentless inspector Goitreau (Michel Bouquet) watches his every step, steadily closing in until Gino is pushed back toward the world he tried to escape. Built around the celebrated Delon-Gabin pairing, the film stands as a classic of French social crime cinema, pleading against the death penalty, harsh prison conditions and the near impossibility of genuine reintegration. A box-office success in its day, it was remade in 2014.
