The Hunchback of Rome

The Hunchback of Rome (Italian: Il gobbo) is a 1960 crime-drama film directed by Carlo Lizzani and made as an Italian-French co-production. It is loosely based on the real life of Giuseppe Albano, an Italian partisan who took part in the Roman Resistance against the German occupation between 1943 and 1945. The screenplay was written jointly by Ugo Pirro, Lizzani himself, and Mario Socrate.

Gérard Blain plays the title character, with Anna Maria Ferrero as the woman whose life becomes entwined with his. The supporting cast includes Bernard Blier, Ivo Garrani and Nino Castelnuovo, while the celebrated writer and filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini also appears among the actors. Shot in Italian and running about 103 minutes, the picture has also been classified as a biographical war drama.
