The Source

The Source is a 2011 comedy-drama directed by Radu Mihăileanu, who co-wrote the screenplay with Alain-Michel Blanc. A French, Belgian and Italian co-production shot in Morocco, it competed in the main selection of the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. The story unfolds in an isolated village somewhere in North Africa, where the women bear the hardest burden of daily life: fetching water from a spring high in the mountains. Determined to make the men share this grueling task, they launch a sex strike, vowing to deny their husbands intimacy until the demand is met, and their protest upends the balance of the whole village. Leïla Bekhti and Hafsia Herzi lead the cast alongside Hiam Abbass and Saleh Bakri. The film went on to receive César nominations for best actress, for Bekhti, and for best costume design.
