The Three Musketeers

The Three Musketeers (Les Trois Mousquetaires, 1953) is a French-Italian swashbuckler film directed by André Hunebelle, one of five pictures he made in collaboration with screenwriter Michel Audiard. Adapted from Alexandre Dumas's celebrated 1844 novel, it follows the young Gascon d'Artagnan, who travels to Paris hoping to join the King's musketeers and soon becomes the inseparable companion of Athos, Porthos and Aramis. Together the four heroes defend the queen's honour against the schemes of Cardinal Richelieu and his agents. Georges Marchal stars as d'Artagnan, supported by a cast that includes Bourvil, Gino Cervi, Danielle Godet and Yvonne Sanson. Shot in French, the film belongs to the classic European cloak-and-dagger adventure tradition of its era.
