The Return of Monte Cristo

The Return of Monte Cristo (original French title: Sous le signe de Monte-Cristo) is a 1968 French-Italian adventure film directed by André Hunebelle. The picture offers a loose, contemporary reworking of Alexandre Dumas's classic novel The Count of Monte Cristo, transposing its themes of betrayal, hidden identity and retribution into a modern setting rather than the original nineteenth-century world. The principal cast includes Paul Barge, Claude Jade, Anny Duperey, Raymond Pellegrin and Pierre Brasseur. Shot in French, the film follows the spirit of Dumas's tale of a wronged man who returns under a new identity to settle scores, while adapting its intrigue and swashbuckling energy to the era in which it was made.
