The Under-Gifted

The Under-Gifted (Les Sous-doués)

Movie · 1980 · 3 people

Claude Zidi both directed and wrote the 1980 French teen comedy Les Sous-doués (The Under-Gifted). Running about 91 minutes, it tells of the unruly pupils at a private cram school preparing for the baccalauréat. It was a big box-office hit in France and led to a sequel. German audiences know it as Glückwunsch … mal wieder sitzengeblieben and Spanish ones as Los cateados; in Russia the title is Pridurki na ekzamenakh.

The students would rather coast to a diploma than study, and they fill their days with one prank after another. The school's headmistress wants them through the exam at any price, so she tightens discipline; the pupils answer by playing tricks on their teachers. One prank sets off such a chain of coincidences that the school blows up. Brought before a court, the teenagers can stay out of prison only by earning the baccalauréat, cheating if need be. Michel Galabru, Maria Pacôme and a young Daniel Auteuil lead the cast, joined by Henri Attal, Robert Dalban, Catherine Erhardy, Dominique Hulin, Étienne Draber and Féodor Atkine.

For the shoot, a building in Versailles stands in for the cram school named Cours Louis XIV.

Through different eyes

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

This French comedy is built on one prank after another by unruly students preparing for an exam. Teenagers may laugh a lot. But be warned: the heroes look for a shortcut to a diploma instead of studying, are even ready to cheat, and keep playing tricks on their teachers. The message for school-age kids isn't a great one. Fine to watch with teens, but it's good to have a little talk afterwards.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

Les Sous-doués pokes fun at exam anxiety and a diploma-obsessed view of education. In a system where the baccalauréat is treated as a gateway to young people's futures, pupils hunting for shortcuts instead of working and a headmistress imposing success through discipline at any cost are really two faces of the same pressure. Cram schools will feel familiar to Turkish viewers too; generations raised on the dershane culture may recognise something of themselves here. Because the film leans on comedy rather than critique, its social commentary stays on the surface. Still, its big box-office success in France suggests the subject struck a chord with a wide audience.

Yeşilçam Nostalgic A viewer raised on the classics, looking for warm storytelling and strong acting.

For an eye raised on the classics, Les Sous-doués is a typical French comedy of the early eighties: prank after prank, a headmistress tightening discipline, unruly pupils. The presence of Michel Galabru and a young Daniel Auteuil gives it a special flavour. Yet the warm bond between teacher and pupil that I look for in school comedies mostly gives way to horseplay here. Anyone hoping for the heart of Hababam Sınıfı may feel something is missing; as light entertainment, it's still enjoyable.
