Asterix & Obelix Take On Caesar (Astérix et Obélix contre César)
René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo's comic series first came to the screen in live action with Asterix and Obelix vs. Caesar (French title Astérix et Obélix contre César), a French-German-Italian co-production. Claude Zidi directed this 1999 fantasy adventure comedy. At the time of its release it was the most expensive production in the history of French cinema. It drew close to 9 million viewers in France and topped the 1999 box office. Its success led to Mission Cleopatra (2002), At the Olympic Games (2008) and At the Service of His Majesty (2012).
The story is set around 50 BC in the Gaulish village that still resists Rome. Caesar cannot subdue it, while the treacherous officer Detritus has hidden the village from him and schemes for his own advancement. The Romans kidnap the druid Getafix, keeper of the village's secret, and Asterix and Obelix set out to rescue him. Christian Clavier plays Asterix, Gérard Depardieu Obelix, Roberto Benigni Detritus and Michel Galabru the chief Abraracourcix.
Zidi, Thomas Gilou and Gérard Lauzier wrote the screenplay. Following no single album, it combines elements from many, including Asterix the Gaul, Asterix the Legionary and Asterix the Gladiator. The film is dedicated to the series' creators, Goscinny and Uderzo.
