Venuto al mondo (Twice Born)

Twice Born (Italian: Venuto al mondo) is a 2012 drama directed by Sergio Castellitto, adapted from Margaret Mazzantini's novel of the same name. Penélope Cruz and Emile Hirsch star in the leading roles.

Gemma and Diego meet in Sarajevo, and her life takes an unexpected turn as she falls deeply in love with him. When the Bosnian war breaks out, Diego loses his life while Gemma escapes to another country. Years after the conflict ends, she returns to Sarajevo with her son, retracing the past and searching for traces of the man she lost. The film interweaves a passionate love affair set against the devastation of war with Gemma's longing for a child and her painful confrontation with memory. The cast also includes Saadet Aksoy and Mira Furlan. An Italian-Spanish-Croatian co-production, the film was co-written for the screen by Castellitto and Mazzantini.
