The Beast in the Heart (La bestia nel cuore)

Shown in Türkiye as Yüreğimdeki Canavar and known in English as Don't Tell, La bestia nel cuore (The Beast in the Heart) sits between drama and mystery as a 2005 Italian-French co-production. Cristina Comencini directed it, adapting a novel she wrote herself. It competed for the Golden Lion at the 62nd Venice International Film Festival and was later nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, representing Italy. It reached Turkish cinemas on 11 August 2006.

The story centres on Sabina. With a successful job, a steady relationship and friends she loves, her life looks untroubled, but nightmares that interrupt her sleep gradually wear that balance down. The family memories she has long kept at a distance only grow sharper, and she has never spoken to anyone about the abuse she suffered from her father as a child. When the past will not let go, she travels to see her brother in America and resolves to face what happened. The cast includes Giovanna Mezzogiorno, Alessio Boni, Stefania Rocca, Angela Finocchiaro and Valerio Binasco.

Comencini wrote the screenplay with Francesca Marciano for Cattleya, and the film runs 120 minutes. Ruthe Stein of the San Francisco Chronicle likened its unsettling mood to Hitchcock's films, Vertigo in particular: what you see is not always real.
