Yılmaz Erdoğan — Biography

Born on 4 November 1967 in Hakkâri to a Kurdish family, Yılmaz Erdoğan grew up in Ankara and enrolled in the civil engineering program at Istanbul Technical University. He left his studies to join Ferhan Şensoy's Nöbetçi Tiyatro company, began writing for the TV comedy show "Olacak O Kadar" in 1988, and continued developing his stage work at Beşiktaş Kültür Merkezi (BKM), which he co-founded with Necati Akpınar.

He became a household name across Turkey playing Mükremin Çıtır opposite Demet Akbağ in the self-written series "Bir Demet Tiyatro" starting in 1993, before moving into filmmaking with his directorial debut "Vizontele" (2001), which broke Turkish box-office records. He went on to write and direct "Vizontele Tuuba," the "Organize İşler" film series, "Kelebeğin Rüyası," and "Gergedan Mevsimi," while also building a strong acting résumé, including the role of Commissar Naci in "Once Upon a Time in Anatolia." His performance opposite Russell Crowe in "The Water Diviner" (2014) earned him the Best Supporting Actor award from the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA), adding to a body of honors that includes the Sadri Alışık, Altın Kelebek, and Afife Theatre awards.

In his personal life, Erdoğan was married to Sanem Oktar from 1993 to 1998, with whom he had a daughter, Berfin, born in 1996. He was later married to actress Belçim Bilgin from 2006 to 2018, and the couple's son, Rodin, was born in 2010.
