Our Grand Despair (Bizim Büyük Çaresizliğimiz) (translated)

Our Grand Despair is a 2011 Turkish drama directed by Seyfi Teoman. Written by Teoman and Barış Bıçakçı, it adapts Bıçakçı's novel of the same title. A co-production of Turkey, the Netherlands, and Germany, it premiered in competition at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival.

Set in Ankara, the story follows Ender and Çetin, two longtime friends in their thirties who become flatmates when Çetin moves back to the city. Their close friend Fikret, visiting from Germany, loses both parents in a traffic accident and must return abroad, leaving behind his younger sister Nihal, a student at Ankara University with two years left before graduating. He entrusts her to Ender and Çetin, turning their household into a home for three. Nihal, numb with grief, at first refuses to connect with the two men, but as the months pass the forced arrangement slowly grows into a quiet, hard-to-name closeness among them. İlker Aksum, Fatih Al, and Baki Davrak lead the cast, alongside Taner Birsel and Mehmet Ali Nuroğlu.
