Bodrum Judge (Bodrum Hakimi) (translated)
Among the four films directed by Türkân Şoray is Bodrum Hâkimi (The Judge of Bodrum), a Turkish romantic drama from 1976. Şoray both directs and takes the lead, with Kadir İnanır alongside her. The film opened on 15 January 1976 and was a big hit in its day. Its story rests on a local folk song born of a real event.
Nevin, a young and beautiful judge, is posted to a coastal town. When she meddles in the affairs of Ömer Bey, the town's beloved local lord, she draws everyone's attention. Ömer has fallen for her and cannot oppose what she does; in time the judge falls for him too, but a great obstacle stands between them. Şoray plays Nevin and İnanır plays Ömer. Yıldırım Gencer plays Captain Bülent, with Kadir Savun and Nubar Terziyan also in the cast.
The story starts from the life of Mefaret Tüzün, one of the Republic's first women judges. Born in 1906 in Tavşanlı, Kütahya, she was appointed to Bodrum in 1951 and died by suicide there in 1954. The reason is still unexplained; one interpretation is that she acted after sentencing to death a prisoner she loved. Akün Film made it; Safa Önal wrote the script, Cahit Berkay composed the music, İrfan Ünal produced and Çetin Tunca shot it. It runs 85 minutes.
