The Trace (İz-Rêç)

İz-Rêç is a 2011 Turkish drama written and directed by Tayfur Aydın, adapted from a short story by author Yavuz Ekinci. It centers on an elderly grandmother living out her final days on the edges of Istanbul, whose last request is to be carried back and buried in the land she once left. Her son reluctantly agrees to make the trip, and the film follows the pair, joined by a younger relative who is himself wrestling with questions of belonging, on a train journey home. Along the way old family secrets long kept hidden begin to surface, and the story becomes as much about the sacrifices the grandmother made across her life as about the burial itself. Cast members Necmettin Çobanoğlu and Serdar Orçin appear in the production, which was shot across Istanbul, Diyarbakır and Batman. Framed by critics as a portrait of internal migration and the toll of leaving one's homeland, the film uses the journey structure to let the family's buried history emerge gradually rather than all at once.
