Endless Love (Sonsuz Aşk)

Movie · 2017 · 7 people

Ahmet Katıksız directed the Turkish romantic drama Sonsuz Aşk (Endless Love), released in cinemas on March 24, 2017. In its theatrical run it drew about 568,000 admissions and grossed close to 6.6 million Turkish lira. Fahriye Evcen and Murat Yıldırım share the leading roles, and the film was promoted as a love story built around well-known stars, and its trailer passed 300,000 views.

The heroine, Zeynep (Fahriye Evcen), lives in a small, orderly world with her brother and takes her happiness from little things. Can (Murat Yıldırım) is a surgeon devoted to his work who became a professor at an early age. On paper their lives share nothing, yet they cross paths unexpectedly and find themselves in a deep love. That love brings obstacles that are very hard to overcome, and the couple has to hold on to their feelings against difficult circumstances. The cast also includes Fatih Al, Filiz Ahmet (Bade), Didem İnselel (Gülgün), Nazlı Pınar Kaya (Elif) and Ege Aydan.

The screenplay is by Deniz Akçay Katıksız, the music by Toygar Işıklı, and the running time is about 114 minutes. Promotional extras include short clips titled “Murat Yıldırım Became a Doctor” and “Fahriye Evcen Became Cinderella”, as well as behind-the-scenes footage shot in Cunda.

Through different eyes

Yeşilçam Nostalgic A viewer raised on the classics, looking for warm storytelling and strong acting.

The love of a surgeon and a young woman content with small joys: the meeting-of-two-worlds story that Yeşilçam adored. This fairy-tale mould can still reach the heart with good acting; the pairing of Fahriye Evcen and Murat Yıldırım drew interest, and the film reached nearly 568,000 viewers. But without the weight of word and song found in the old melodramas, a story leaning only on a good-looking couple does not satisfy me. I hope Toygar Işıklı's music carries the story.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

A romantic drama, so do not expect pace. The surgeon and the young woman's paths cross, love grows, obstacles appear; that is the formula. Fans of the genre will be fine, but for someone after tension and movement, 114 minutes can drag. To me the real question is whether the obstacles create real stakes. If they do not, the love story stays flat too.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Sonsuz Aşk sets out with a ready-made star couple and a proven formula: two people from different worlds, a love that grows fast, obstacles to overcome. This structure has been used hundreds of times in cinema; originality can only come from the detail of the characters and the dialogue. A trailer watched over 300,000 times and 568,000 tickets show that star power worked, but whether that power adds depth to the scenes is another question. Idealised portraits such as a surgeon who became a professor at a young age can also strain credibility.
