The Fall of Leaves (Yaprak Dökümü) (translated)

Yaprak Dökümü (The Fall of Leaves) is a Turkish family drama series produced by Ay Yapım and broadcast on Kanal D from 13 September 2006 to 29 December 2010, running for five seasons and 174 episodes. Directed by Mesude Eraslan and written by Ece Yörenç and Melek Gençoğlu, it adapts the classic novel of the same name by Reşat Nuri Güntekin.

Set in Istanbul, the series charts the slow unravelling of the Tekin family after they move to the metropolis. Caught between deep-rooted traditional values and the material temptations of modern city life, the members of this once tightly knit household drift away one by one — like leaves falling in autumn, in keeping with the novel's central metaphor.

Halil Ergün, Güven Hokna, Bennu Yıldırımlar, Deniz Çakır, Tolga Karel, Gökçe Bahadır and Fahriye Evcen headed the cast, with an ensemble that also included Neslihan Atagül, Ali Sunal, Sedef Avcı and Zerrin Tekindor. The show served as a springboard to fame for several of its younger stars, notably Fahriye Evcen and Neslihan Atagül, and its score was composed by Toygar Işıklı.

A ratings phenomenon that topped the charts from its first episode to its finale — at times drawing an audience share of over fifty percent — Yaprak Dökümü became one of the most awarded Turkish series, winning three Golden Butterfly Awards in 2008, and its broadcast rights were sold to more than thirty countries. It remains one of the most frequently rerun titles in Turkish television history and found devoted audiences abroad, from Serbia and Bosnia to the Arab world.
