Damla Sönmez — Biography
Tilya Damla Sönmez was born on 3 May 1987 in Istanbul. After St. Joseph High School she studied theatre at the Sorbonne in Paris, took violin and piano lessons at the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University State Conservatory, and graduated from the Theatre Department of Yeditepe University.
She began her acting career with the 2004 series Camdan Pabuçlar and went on to appear in shows including Gece Gündüz, Türkan, Bir Aşk Hikayesi, Güllerin Savaşı, Şubat and Aziz; her performance in the film Bornova Bornova earned her the Best Supporting Actress award at the 2009 Golden Orange Film Festival. She also built a film career with titles such as Sen Aydınlatırsın Geceyi, Deniz Seviyesi, Uzun Hikaye, Çakal, Mahpeyker: Kösem Sultan and Ayla, and raised her international profile with the films Sibel and I Am You.
More recently she has appeared in the Netflix documentary Rise of Empires: Ottoman and the series Kötü Kan; in July 2026 she quietly married her longtime partner, talent manager İlkay Akıncı, making headlines in the Turkish press.
