Ayla: The Daughter of War (Ayla)

Ayla is a 2017 Turkish-South Korean drama and war film directed by Can Ulkay and written by Yiğit Güralp. Inspired by true events from the Korean War that began in 1950, it follows Sergeant Süleyman Dilbirliği, a Turkish soldier who finds a five-year-old Korean girl orphaned on the battlefield, names her Ayla and shelters her within his unit. A father-daughter bond forms between them, but when his brigade is ordered back to Türkiye he must leave her behind, and the two spend years trying to find each other again.

Filmed in Türkiye and South Korea from 2016, the film opened in Türkiye on 27 October 2017. Mustafa Uslu produced it and Fahir Atakoğlu composed the score. The cast includes İsmail Hacıoğlu, Çetin Tekindor, Kim Seol, Ali Atay, Damla Sönmez and Murat Yıldırım. Ayla was Türkiye's submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 90th Academy Awards, though it was not nominated.
