Rise of Empires: Ottoman is a Turkish historical docudrama made for Netflix, blending dramatized scenes with documentary-style narration. Sitting between drama, war and history, it tells the story of the 15th-century Ottoman ruler Mehmed II, known as Mehmed the Conqueror. Two seasons of six episodes each, 12 in all, have aired: the first on 24 January 2020, the second on 29 December 2022.

The first season looks at the conquest of Constantinople, the event that ended the Ottoman founding era, from an unusual angle. The second turns to the 1462 campaign in Wallachia, in present-day Romania, and Mehmed's rivalry with Vlad III, the Impaler, a new ruler contesting Ottoman hegemony. Cem Yiğit Üzümoğlu stars as Mehmed, with Tommaso Basili, Daniel Nuță, Tuba Büyüküstün, Damla Sönmez, Osman Sonant and Selim Bayraktar in the cast. Expert commentary is interwoven with dramatic reenactments of the period.

Emre Şahin directed and Kelly McPherson wrote the series, which comes from Karga Seven Pictures and STX Entertainment, bringing two defining chapters of Ottoman history to a global audience.

Rise of Empires: Ottoman chooses the docudrama form to introduce Mehmed the Conqueror to a world audience, cutting expert commentary into its dramatized scenes. That choice makes it easier to see the conquest of Constantinople and the 1462 campaign in Wallachia not just as wars but as political reckonings. In the second season, the rivalry with Vlad III, known as Vlad the Impaler, offers an interesting frame through a ruler challenging Ottoman dominance. Still, as an international production it leans on the big picture and dramatic effect rather than detail; anyone keen to dig deeper into the history should treat it as a starting point.

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

Two seasons of six episodes, twelve in all: tight enough to finish in a weekend. Cem Yiğit Üzümoğlu's Mehmed carries a young ruler's ambition well, and Tuba Büyüküstün, Damla Sönmez and Selim Bayraktar add weight to the cast. But to be honest, the documentary framing makes it hard to bond with the characters. Just as you sink into a scene, an expert cuts in and the emotional flow breaks. Anyone expecting a classic period drama may find that jarring, so it's best to go in knowing the format.

Action & Thriller Fan Puts pace, tension and set pieces first; little patience for slow drama.

There are two big chapters built around war, a siege and a campaign, and in the second season the rivalry with Vlad the Impaler turns up the heat. The reenactments move well and hold the tension. The problem is that everything gets interrupted by talking heads, so the pace hits the brakes just as it builds. Think of it as an action-flavoured history documentary rather than a war series, and watch it that way.
