Engin Akyürek — Biography

Born in Ankara on 12 October 1981, Engin Akyürek traces his family's roots to Tercan, a district of Erzincan; his father held a government post, his mother kept the house, and he grew up with a younger brother. He completed a history degree at Ankara University in 2002, and though he had no formal training as an actor he placed in the talent contest Türkiye'nin Yıldızları, competing there alongside a young Beren Saat, who would later become one of the most celebrated names in Turkish television. He drew notice in 2004 for playing Kadir in Yabancı Damat.

His film debut came with the part of Cevat in Kader (2006), a performance that brought him "most promising actor" honors from both ÇASOD and the Siyad Turkish Cinema critics' association. In the 2009 series Bir Bulut Olsam he took his first leading role, playing Mustafa Bulut. In the 2010 hit Fatmagül'ün Suçu Ne?, his portrayal of Kerim Ilgaz turned him into a household name, and four years later, in Kara Para Aşk, where he played Ömer Demir, he won a best actor prize at a prestigious South Korean drama festival plus an International Emmy nomination.

Between 2017 and 2023 he took the lead in Ölene Kadar, Sefirin Kızı and Adım Farah, and in 2022 he both starred in and wrote the story for Disney+'s first Turkish original series, Kaçış. Akyürek serves as brand ambassador for both Shell and Disney+ Türkiye; he published story collections in 2018 and 2023, followed by "İsimsiz" in 2026, the same year he returned to public attention opposite Aslı Enver in the series Enfes Bir Akşam.
