TV Series · 2021–2022 · 7 people

Running for a single season, the Turkish television drama Elkızı began on October 23, 2021 and ended with its 13th episode on January 30, 2022. It blends drama and romance, aired on NOW and was produced by NTC Medya. It follows a young woman raised without love as she fights to build a family of her own.

Ezo lost her mother to suicide. Belittled by her father and ignored by her grandmother, she hardens into a defiant young woman who refuses to be broken by the abuse she endures. Her one dream is to become the educated, strong and independent woman her mother wanted her to be. One night her father, Resul, lets slip a terrible confession, and everything is turned upside down. After a fire at the farmhouse, Ezo confesses to her grandmother Cavidan, who is left caught between a granddaughter who killed her son and the only family she has left. Ezo runs toward the dream of a proper family, knocking aside anyone in her way, unaware that her mother's fate may await her too.

Feride Kaytan directed and Hilal Yıldız wrote the script, and filming took place around Ula in Muğla. Sevda Erginci, Perihan Savaş and İsmail Ege Şaşmaz share the lead roles, with Sedef Avcı and Toprak Sağlam also in the cast.

Series Binger A series devotee tracking character arcs, cast chemistry and season pacing.

With a single season of 13 episodes, Elkızı is short and intense, a relief for anyone worn out by long seasons. Ezo, raised without love, turning into a defiant young woman who refuses to bow to those who want to break her is a strong character line. The leads shared by Sevda Erginci, Perihan Savaş and İsmail Ege Şaşmaz carry the tension within the family seriously. Once her father lets slip a confession one night, the story turns harsh fast. With so little time, though, some relationships never fully mature, and Ezo knocking aside whoever stands in her way can make it hard to stay attached to her.

History & Society Lens Asks about the period, the social background and what the work reflects.

Through a young woman raised in a loveless home and her struggle to build a family of her own, Elkızı asks how violence and humiliation inside a family shape a person. Ezo, who lost her mother to suicide, is belittled by her father and ignored by her grandmother while she dreams of becoming the educated, strong and independent woman her mother wanted her to be. That dream puts the idea of a woman standing on her own feet through education at the heart of the story. The thought that her mother's fate may await her too raises the show's real question: can anyone escape the wounds a family hands down? Filmed around Ula in Muğla, the series asks it within a closed family world.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

Elkızı is not a show for family viewing. There's a mother's suicide, a father's humiliation, violence, a fire and heavy confessions. The subject is harsh and dark. It's too much for children and younger teens. For adults, though, it's a strong family drama about a young woman fighting to stay on her feet. One good thing is that it's short: it ends after 13 episodes.
