The Life and Movies of Erşan Kuneri

TV Series · 2022 · 5 people

Made for Netflix, the Turkish comedy web series Erşan Kuneri goes by The Life and Movies of Erşan Kuneri internationally. It follows a producer of erotic films who, in the 1970s and 1980s, tries to break away from that niche and make pictures in a range of other genres. The first season arrived on May 13, 2022, and a second followed on October 10, 2024.

At the center is Erşan himself, who works as both producer and director and keeps reinventing his output: adventure, period drama, horror and science fiction all get a turn. The chaos on set and the colorful world of the film business of that time drive the humor. The ensemble includes Çağlar Çorumlu as Altın Oran, Uraz Kaygılaroğlu as İbrahim Tumtum and Merve Dizdar as Feride.

Cem Yılmaz created the show, wrote and directed it, and plays the lead. Viewers had already met the character in his earlier films G.O.R.A. and Arif V 216. Filming began in June 2021 and wrapped in September of that year.

Through different eyes

Yeşilçam Nostalgic A viewer raised on the classics, looking for warm storytelling and strong acting.

The film sets of the 1970s and 1980s are like a photo album of memories for anyone who loves Yeşilçam. Erşan Kuneri pokes fun at the colourful film world of that era through attempts at adventure, period drama, horror and science fiction, and Cem Yılmaz's fascination with the cinema of those years shows everywhere. Still, a hero who comes from producing erotic films is a premise that pushes the limits of comedy, and those of us who miss the grace of the old films may find that ground a little jarring. It's a parody that looks back on those years with affection, but it doesn't warm every heart equally.

Cinephile Looks at script, editing and directing choices; keeps a distance from formula films.

Erşan Kuneri is essentially an anthology of genre parodies: Erşan's attempts stretch across adventure, period drama, horror and science fiction, giving Cem Yılmaz plenty of room for both spoof and homage to film history. Yılmaz handling everything as creator, writer, director and star gives the series a unified tone, but it also means a single comic sensibility dominates the whole thing. The ensemble of Çağlar Çorumlu, Uraz Kaygılaroğlu and Merve Dizdar provides strong support around that centre. Giving a familiar side character from G.O.R.A. and Arif V 216 his own series is a bold choice, and the comedy of on-set chaos owes its success to how well it knows each genre's conventions.

Family Viewer Asks whether the whole household can watch it; cares about humour and heart.

Erşan Kuneri is a funny show, but it's not a family show. The main character produces erotic films, and the story grows out of his attempts to leave that behind and make other kinds of movies. So I wouldn't recommend watching it with children. For adults and fans of old Turkish cinema, though, it can be great fun, and anyone who knows Cem Yılmaz's humour will already have a good idea of what to expect.
