Germinal

Germinal is a 1963 French-language drama directed by Yves Allégret, made as a co-production between France, Italy and Hungary. Adapted for the screen by Charles Spaak, it brings Émile Zola's celebrated 1885 novel of the same name to cinema. The story unfolds in a northern French coal-mining town in the nineteenth century, where the jobless Étienne Lantier finds work in the pits and becomes drawn into the miners' world of hardship, poverty and growing unrest, which finally erupts into a bitter strike. Shot in 1962 and released the following year, the film features a large ensemble cast including Bernard Blier, Claude Brasseur and Jean Sorel alongside Claude Cerval, Jacques Monod and Robert Dalban. Allégret's version stays close to the novel's portrait of working-class solidarity and despair, rendering the harsh daily life underground and the human cost of the industrial age.
