Masculin Féminin (Masculin – féminin: 15 faits précis)

Written and directed by Jean-Luc Godard, this 1966 black-and-white French-Swedish co-production loosely adapts two stories by Guy de Maupassant, Le Signe and La Femme de Paul. Freshly demobilized from military service, the idealistic young Paul (Jean-Pierre Léaud) looks for work and campaigns against the Vietnam War while falling in love with Madeleine (Chantal Goya), an aspiring pop singer more concerned with her career than romance.

The pair drift into a four-way household with Madeleine's roommates Catherine and Elisabeth, as the camera probes the young characters in vérité-style interviews about love, sex and politics. Peppered with references to figures like Charles de Gaulle and Bob Dylan, the film paints a portrait of 1960s Paris under its famous intertitle, 'The Children of Marx and Coca-Cola,' and earned Léaud a Silver Bear at the 1966 Berlin Film Festival.
