The Ottoman Republic (Osmanlı Cumhuriyeti)
Osmanlı Cumhuriyeti (The Ottoman Republic) is a Turkish comedy and alternative history film directed and written by Gani Müjde, released on November 21, 2008. Starring Ata Demirer, it is built on the question of what would have happened if Mustafa Kemal Atatürk had never existed: after young Mustafa dies in 1888, the War of Independence never takes place, and the Ottoman state survives into 2008 under an American mandate.
Demirer plays Sultan Osman VII, who falls in love with a young woman and gradually realizes he is merely a puppet in the hands of those around him. The film was shot over five and a half weeks in 23 locations, including Topkapi Palace, Yıldız Palace and Hagia Irene, with around 1,500 people involved. The cast features Vildan Atasever, Sümer Tilmaç, Ali Düşenkalkar and Sezen Aksu playing herself. Produced by Avşar Film, it became the fourth-highest-grossing Turkish film of 2008.
