Pandora's Box (Pandora'nın Kutusu)

Pandora's Box is a 2008 drama film directed by Yeşim Ustaoğlu, who co-wrote the screenplay with Sema Kaygusuz. A co-production between Turkey, France, and Germany, it premiered at the Toronto Film Festival before opening in Türkiye on 23 January 2009. Shot over seven weeks, the film contrasts fog-covered Istanbul cityscapes with the calm of the Black Sea's Küre Mountains.

The story follows three middle-aged siblings who, despite living in the same city, have drifted apart and lost touch. When their elderly mother Nusret goes missing from her mountain village, they reunite to find her and bring her to Istanbul, a journey that opens old resentments and buried memories like a Pandora's box. Only her rebellious grandson Murat emerges unscathed from this painful reckoning. Starring Tsilla Chelton, Derya Alabora, and Onur Ünsal, the film won Best Film and Best Actress (Chelton) at the San Sebastián Film Festival.
