The President

The President (Le Président) is a 1961 French-Italian political drama directed by Henri Verneuil, who adapted Georges Simenon's novel of the same name together with Michel Audiard, altering the book's ending. Its title refers to the old French designation for the head of government, président du conseil, a term later replaced by premier ministre. Jean Gabin plays an ageing prime minister who has devoted his entire career to the national good. Forced to step aside, the veteran statesman is twice betrayed by an opportunistic younger politician, played by Bernard Blier, yet ultimately manages to exact his revenge. Built around extended dialogue, the film draws on the political debates of its era, including monetary devaluation and the clash between champions of a European customs union and sceptics who question whether the project truly serves the country's prosperity and standing. The cast also features Renée Faure and Louis Seigner.
