The Wild Pear Tree (Ahlat Ağacı)

The Wild Pear Tree is a 2018 drama directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, who co-wrote the screenplay with his wife Ebru Ceylan and Akın Aksu. A co-production led by Turkey and France with several other countries, it had its world premiere on 18 May 2018 in the main competition of the 71st Cannes Film Festival, contending for the Palme d'Or. It was also submitted as Turkey's candidate for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards but was ultimately not nominated.

Running over three hours, the film follows Sinan, a literature-loving recent university graduate who returns to his Anatolian hometown hoping to raise money to publish his first book, only to be burdened by his father's old debts. Sinan is played by Doğu Demirkol in his screen debut, alongside leads Murat Cemcir and Bennu Yıldırımlar, with Hazar Ergüçlü, Serkan Keskin, Öner Erkan, Özay Fecht and Ahmet Rıfat Şungar rounding out the ensemble.
