Ahmet Rıfat Şungar — Biography

Ahmet Rıfat Şungar was born on 9 July 1983 in Istanbul's Kartal district, where he also finished high school before training as an actor in the Theatre Department of Istanbul University State Conservatory. His screen career began in 2006 with Janjan and Hatırla Sevgili, followed by a role in the series Asi.

His breakthrough with wider audiences came in 2008, playing İsmail in Nuri Bilge Ceylan's Üç Maymun (Three Monkeys), a performance that drew considerable attention in film circles. In the years that followed he took on roles in films including Beş Şehir, Gözetleme Kulesi, Soğuk, Deniz Seviyesi and Tereddüt, and in series such as Merhamet, Karadağlar, Bir Ömür Yetmez, Vatanım Sensin and Kadın; in 2018 he worked with Ceylan again on Ahlat Ağacı (The Wild Pear Tree). He married actress Esra Gülmen in 2021. More recently he appeared in Asaf, Kimler Geldi Kimler Geçti, Cenaze and Neandria, and in 2025 returned to screens as Faruk in the series Eşref Rüya and in the film Gecenin Kıyısı. With more than thirty film and television credits, he is regarded as one of Turkish cinema's well-known actors.
