Three Monkeys (Üç Maymun)
Three Monkeys is a 2008 drama directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan as a co-production of Turkey, France and Italy, with Ceylan co-writing the screenplay alongside his wife Ebru Ceylan and actor Ercan Kesal. Its title invokes the three monkeys who see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil; the story follows a family torn apart as small weaknesses grow into great lies, while its members try to hold together by refusing to acknowledge the truth.
Wealthy businessman Servet, about to stand as an opposition candidate in upcoming elections, causes a fatal car accident and pays his driver Eyüp to take the blame and go to prison in his place. While Eyüp is jailed, Servet begins an affair with his wife Hacer, and the anger of their son İsmail drags the family into a new crime. Yavuz Bingöl, Hatice Aslan, Ahmet Rıfat Şungar and Ercan Kesal star. The film earned Ceylan the Best Director award at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival and, as Turkey's entry for the 81st Academy Awards, reached the final nine-film shortlist.
