Germany, the Bitter Homeland (Almanya Acı Vatan) (translated)
Şerif Gören directed the Turkish film Almanya Acı Vatan (Germany, the Bitter Homeland) in 1979, blending drama, sentiment and political themes. Zehra Tan wrote the screenplay, and Gülşah Film and Fatoş Film produced it. Through the story of a newly married couple, it portrays the life of Turkish workers who emigrated to Germany. It was shot in colour on 35 mm.
The story begins with a marriage of convenience. Mahmut, who wants to go to Germany, marries Güldane, who already works there, as a formality: she will bring him over, and in return he leaves her his field and animals. The two part ways on arriving, but the hardships of life abroad draw them together again, and after a while they decide to make the marriage real. Mahmut's transformation, however, pushes Güldane towards important decisions. Hülya Koçyiğit plays Güldane and Rahmi Saltuk plays Mahmut, with Suavi Eren (Talat), Bedri Uğur (Afili), Orhan Alkan (Musa), Mine Tokgöz and Fikriye Korkmaz in the cast.
Filming took place under difficult conditions in the western sector of Berlin, then divided by the Berlin Wall. Selim Soydan produced and İzzet Akay was director of photography; Rahmi Saltuk is also credited for the music. Several roles were dubbed afterwards: Işık Yenersu voiced Koçyiğit, Erhan Yazıcıoğlu voiced Suavi Eren and Engin Şenkan voiced Saltuk.
