The American (Amerikalı) (translated)
Amerikalı is a 1993 Turkish comedy directed by Şerif Gören, from a screenplay he wrote together with Ümit Ünal and Baran Seyhan. The story follows a man who, after a stint in prison, escapes and makes his way to America, where over two decades he amasses an enormous fortune. Known abroad as "Şeref the Turk," the billionaire returns home in a cowboy hat and Dallas-style boots, determined to settle the score for the betrayal that once ruined him.
What he finds on arrival is a Turkey transformed into a kind of "Little America," alien to everything he remembers. While searching for Melek, a figure from his past, he is pulled into a chaotic adventure entangled with crime and violence. Şener Şen leads the cast as Şeref, alongside Taner Barlas, Lale Mansur and Eray Özbal. The film was a major box-office draw of its era, one of the few Turkish productions after Arabesk (1989) to pass the one-million-viewer mark.
