Desert Eagle (Çöl Kartalı) (translated)
Çöl Kartalı (Desert Eagle) is a 1972 colour Turkish film written and directed by Halit Refiğ. Combining adventure, romance and historical drama, it was produced by Memduh Ün's Uğur Film, opened on October 1, 1972 and runs 87 minutes. Cüneyt Arkın leads the cast. Set in the years of Ottoman trouble with desert tribes in Yemen, it weaves love, espionage and war into one story; the secret passion of two friends for the same girl recalls Cyrano de Bergerac.
The action starts in 1913, just after the Balkan Wars. Captain Murat (Cüneyt Arkın) and Captain Faruk (Süleyman Turan), comrades since school, are decorated by Kamil Pasha (Atıf Kaptan). Both love the pasha's daughter Leyla (Bahar Erdeniz), and each hides it from the other. The pasha's guests include Hüseyin, grandson of Yemen's Imam Talha (Murat Tok), and Herr Jacobi of German intelligence. When Hüseyin is kidnapped by the men of Seyit İdris (Hayati Hamzaoğlu), the two captains are sent into the Yemeni desert to rescue him. Murat is wounded there and helped by the young Hacer (Meral Zeren).
Cahit Engin was the cinematographer, and filming is said to have taken place in Istanbul, Diyarbakır and Mardin. The film uses classical Turkish pieces such as Tamburi Cemil Bey's Ferahfeza Peşrevi alongside music from Maurice Jarre's Lawrence of Arabia.
