The Farmhand (Yanaşma) (translated)
The colour Turkish melodrama Yanaşma dates from 1973. Duygu Sağıroğlu wrote and directed it, Memduh Ün produced it and Uğur Film backed it. It opened on 1 March 1974. Its title refers to the "yanaşma", a young hand taken into a village landlord's service, and this figure is at the heart of the story.
Memo (Cüneyt Arkın) serves in the household of the village landlord, who took him in as a yanaşma at an early age. The landlord's daughter Cano (Meral Zeren) falls for Memo, and he is not indifferent to her. But he fears the landlord and sees no future, knowing he is only a yanaşma, so he first runs from the love. The story hardens into a conflict around custom and class difference. Turgut Özatay plays Derviş Ağa and Hayati Hamzaoğlu plays Kara Ali, with Haydar Karaer as Müslüm Ağa, İbrahim Uğurlu as Dursun and Sabahat Işık as Emine.
Orhan Kapkı and Kaya Ererez were the directors of photography and Mehmet Özdemir the editor; Ören Film handled the colourisation.
