Vatan ve Namık Kemal is a 1969 Turkish historical war drama written and directed by Duygu Sağıroğlu and produced by Uğur Film. Set in the Ottoman era around the Balkans and Silistre during a war with Russia, the film follows İslam Bey and Zekiye, two lovers separated when fighting suddenly breaks out. İslam goes to the front and is wounded in battle, facing the risk of losing his sight. Unwilling to be parted from him, Zekiye disguises herself as a man and enlists in the army, where fortune places her as İslam's attendant. When her identity is revealed, İslam cannot swallow his pride and a rift opens between them. Zekiye then volunteers for a dangerous secret mission to destroy the enemy's ammunition stores. Having regained his eyesight, İslam sets out after her, determined both to rescue the captured Zekiye and to complete the destruction of the enemy depot. The spirit of the patriotic poet Namık Kemal and the Young Turk atmosphere of the period frame the story. Cüneyt Arkın stars as İslam Bey, with Fatma Girik as Zekiye.
